Breaking Fast, Breaking Trust

Open letter to the leadership of Bonnyrigg Mosque,

We’re not going to dress this up politely.

You invited Chris Minns to your iftar — and honestly, it’s hard to understand how you justified that to yourselves.

This is the same Premier whose government pushed through aggressive anti-protest measures, giving police expanded powers to shut people down, move them on, and silence them.
The same leadership under which people – our people – were met with force in the streets.

Women. Elderly. Children.
Pepper-sprayed. Pushed. Thrown around. Injured. Bones broken.

And then the moment that really crossed a line — people praying Maghreb, hands raised, completely defenceless… shoved, dragged, disrupted. Even human rights groups described the police response as excessive force against people kneeling in prayer.

And what did Minns do after that?

He refused to apologise to the Muslim community. Flat out.

So explain this — what exactly are you honouring by hosting him?

Because it doesn’t stop there.

This is also a man who rolled out the red carpet for Isaac Herzog — declared his visit a “major event,” handed police sweeping powers, and played the role of a friendly host while people across the country were calling for accountability.

A UN expert, Chris Sidoti, even argued Herzog should be investigated over alleged war crimes — and yet here, he was welcomed, protected, shielded from protest. (As widely reported in independent media coverage of the visit.)

So again — what are you doing?

Iftar is not a networking dinner.
It’s not a PR opportunity.
It’s not a place to rehabilitate the image of politicians who have overseen harm against your own community.

Where is your honour?

Is the blood of your fellow Muslims so cheap?

Where are the Islamic values your leadership is supposed to uphold — justice, dignity, courage?

Because from the outside, this doesn’t look like leadership.
It looks like a betrayal.

And people see it.

They might not all say it out loud — but they see it.

You owe this community an explanation.
